Inside the device, protection is mainly achieved through thermal and magnetic mechanisms. Under overload conditions, a bimetal element in the thermal unit heats up and bends as the current exceeds the rated limit. This movement actuates the tripping mechanism, which causes the handle of a 1600 amp 3 pole mccb with auxiliary contacts to switch to the off position and cutting off the circuit.
