A cut out, which is also called drop out fuse, is a type of outdoor protective equipment, which installs on the overhead power distribution system to protect distribution transformer and overhead power line from short circuit over load faults, while providing a visible disconnecting point to protect maintenance personnel from potential electric shock accidents. It combines with a fuse element and a mechanical switch in one unit, allowing it to disconnect the power line safely when blown.
The purpose of a cut out fuse in a power distribution system is to supply short circuit protection and over load protection from the primary side of a distribution transformer, while providing a visible disconnecting point for maintenance personnel to reduce the risk of electric shock.
When the current flows through the fuse element normally, the distribution transformer and power line work without interruption.
