In this 33 0.4kv 1250kva single phase pad mounted transformer application, why is 0.4kV typically used on the low voltage side instead of other voltage levels?

400V (three phase) / 230V (single phase) are common voltage levels in IEC standard low voltage power distribution systems, and are widely used in residential, commercial and light industrial applications. For equipment such as low voltage switch cabinets, circuit breakers, and cables, they are mature and have a high cost performance ratio at the 400V level. Single phase 230V can directly supply power to ordinary lighting, sockets and household appliances without the need for additional voltage reduction.

0.4kV can typically be transmitted over a distance of 200 to 500 meters within a residential or commercial area (satisfying a normal voltage drop of ≤5%). 1250kVA is often used at larger load points such as shopping centers, campuses, medical centers, with the transformer located close to the load center. 0.4kV is sufficient and no higher voltage is required.

When three such 33 0.4kv 1250kva single phase pad mounted transformers are used to form a three phase group (total capacity 3750kVA), compared to using one three phase transformer of the same capacity. what are the key differences and precautions in terms of load distribution, neutral point grounding, and protection configuration?

When three 33 0.4kv 1250kva single phase pad mounted transformers are used in a three phase configuration, the core difference from a single phase transformer of the same capacity is as follows:

The load distribution must be strictly balanced; otherwise, overload in a certain phase will cause a severe deviation at the neutral point and cannot be compensated as in a three phase transformer through mutual magnetic field interaction.

First, for the neutral point grounding, the low voltage neutral points of the three 33 0.4kv 1250kva single phase pad mounted transformers need to be externally connected and then grounded at a single point. Otherwise, circulating currents and ground potential differences are likely to occur. In contrast, the neutral points of the three phase transformers are directly led out internally and are simple and reliable to ground.

Second, in terms of protection, each 33 0.4kv 1250kva single phase pad mounted transformers in the single phase group has its high voltage side independently configured with fuses. In the event of a fault in one phase, the other two phases may still be able to supply power. Therefore, a phase failure alarm must be added, and a zero sequence protection needs to be specially designed for the low voltage side. In contrast, the three phase transformers usually have a unified trip, and the protection coordination is simpler.

Overall, the 33 0.4kv 1250kva single phase pad mounted transformers group is flexible in expansion, convenient in transportation, but has complex protection, higher requirements for load balance, and a larger total cost and floor area. It is suitable for phased construction or scenarios with a single phase load as the main load.
